Following this discovery, extensive research was conducted at the site by specialists from the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. The investigations concluded that the mass grave was connected to the 1918 genocide committed by Armenian armed groups against the local civilian population.
