On March 26, 1998, President of Azerbaijan Republic Heydar Aliyev signed the Decree on the “Genocide of Azerbaijanis” and those horrific events received proper political recognition. March 31 was declared the Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis. The Decree read: “All the tragedies of Azerbaijan in the 19th and 20th centuries were accompanied by the seizure of their lands and were comprising separate stages of planned genocide policy of the Armenians against Azerbaijanis. Only to the one of these events – the March 1918 Genocide, was made attempt to give a political assessment. As the successor of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, Azerbaijan Republic accepts the political assessment of genocide incidents as a judgment of history.
